Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where does OBK get the food from?

A: Several organisations donate food to OBK. Our main source of fresh produce is food rescue from organisations such as SecondBite. We do need to buy some of the products we use, like protein and day-to-day essentials.

Q: What types of meals are prepared?

A: Wholesome, balanced, nutritious hot meals. Stews, curries, soups, stir-fries, etc. We get feedback from the people we serve in order to make more of what they like.

Q: Are the meals nutritious?

A: Our meals are mainly plant-based, and thanks to working with top Australian nutritionists, we are able to ensure they are very wholesome.

Q: How many meals do you give out per year?

A: Last year 250 000 meals were made and distributed to people in need across NSW.

Q: Where is the food distributed?

A: We supply several charities including Bear Cottage, Wesley mission, Vinnies, Clown Doctors, Lou's Place, Gift of Life, Marys House, Oasis and Youth of the Streets. However, we have a no questions asked policy - should anyone need food they can come to OBK and we will always help.

Q: Can I donate food?

A: Given the combination of needing to abide by government mandated food regulations and being a kosher kitchen, it's difficult to receive food from individuals. That being said, we always inspect produce being offered to us to see if we are able to accept it or not.

Q: How can I help?
A: You can help in a few ways:

  • By booking your next team building, birthday, function or event at OBK

  • By volunteering your time to help with the day-to-day running of the kitchen

  • By donating to our cause. Whether it be with equipment, services or money - without the support of the community, OBK would not be where it is today.

Q: How do I volunteer?

A: Sign up to volunteer by creating your volunteer profile, click here.

  • Please note, if you are over 18 you are required to get a Working With Children Check.

  • Once you have created your profile you can then sign up to the timeslots or events which work for you.

Q: Do you see a growing demand for food requests?

A: Yes, more and more each year.

Q: How does OBK differ from other food charities?

A: Our ethos is to connect and empower people, bringing everyone together, working to make a difference. We aim to turn recipients into givers.

Q: Does OBK operate nationally?

A: Currently we only have one kitchen in Bondi, NSW. It is our dream to one day operate across Australia, with several kitchens.

Q: Can anyone come in?

A: Everyone is always welcome, the kitchen is the community’s home.

Q: If I need food how do I get it?

A: Always best to call us on (02) 8084 2729 and we will organise it for you. If possible, a delivery can be arranged.

Q: Are you partners with any other charities?

A: The charities we currently support can be found here
